Family Visas

The family stream visa are those for which eligibility is based on a specified familial relationship with an Australian citizen, permanent resident or ENZ Citizen. There is no automatic 'right' for family members of Australians to migrate toAustralia. Like all visa applicants, the eligibility of family members to travel to, enter or remain in jAustralia, whether temporarily or permanently, is based on complex eligibility criteria.  


Partner visa Subclass 309/100(Offshore)

This visa is for a person who is married to, or in a de facto relationship with, an Australian citizen, permanent resident or ENZ Citizen and who is outside Australia when they apply. The visa is  'provisional' in that it is temporary and can lead to a permanent Partner subclass 100 visa.

Partner visa Subclass 820/801(Onshore)

This visa is for a person who is married to, or in a de facto relationship with, an Australian citizen, permanent resident or ENZ Citizen. This visa, however, is for applicants who are inside Australia when they apply. The visa can lead to a permanent Partner subclass 801 visa.

Prospective Marriage visa (Subclass 300)

Prospective Marriage visa (Subclass 300) Also known as  the 'fiancé ' visa, this visa is for a person who is engaged, but not yet married, to an Australian citizen, permanent resident or ENZ Citizen.

Child Visa (Subclass 101)

Child visas are for the biological, adopted and, in limited circumstances, step-child of an Australian citizen, permanent residence or ENZ Citizen. The subclass 101 visa is for applicants who are outside Australia at the time they apply. If the child has a bodily or mental impairment, the age limit does not apply.

Child Visa (Subclass 802)

This visa may be lodged by an applicant of any age while the applicant is outside or inside Australia. Applicants are not entitled to a bridging visa and must be outside Australia at the time the visa is granted

Aged Parent(Residence) Subclass 804

An application for this visa must be lodged while an applicant is in Australia. The visa is for 'aged' (see....) parents and may be granted while the applicant is in Australia. Processing delays are extensive for this visa.  An applicant is an ordinary eligible for a bridging visa during processing. However, applicants are not eligible for Medicare until the visa is granted.

Contributory Parent (Migrant) subclass 143

An application for this visa may be lodged by an applicant of any aged while the applicant is outside or inside Australia. The applicant is not entitled to a bridging visa and must be outside Australia at the time the visa is granted.

Contributory (Temporary) subclass 173

An applicant may, however, be inside or outside Australia at the time of grant, making them eligible for a bridging visa during processing.  Contributory Parent (Temporary) Subclass 173 An application for this visa may be lodged by an applicant of any age while the applicant is outside or inside Australia. The applicant is not entitled to a bridging visa and must be outside Australia at the time visa is granted.

Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) subclass 864

An application for this visa must be lodged while an applicant is in Australia. The visa is for single "aged" parents. An applicant is ordinarily eligible for a bridging visa during processing. However, applicants are not eligible for Medicare until the visa is granted.  Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Subclass 884 An application for this visa must be lodged while an applicant is in Australia. The visa is intended for "aged" parents and may only be granted while the applicant is in Australia. An applicant is ordinarily eligible for a bridging visa during processing. However, applicants are not eligible for Medicare until the visa is granted. The visa is temporary only (around 2 years) and allows an applicant to stagger payment of the VACs leading to the grant of the permanent visa (Subclass 864), rather than having to pay the large fees for the subclass 864 in an abridged per
